Figure 6-14. A 128-by-128 square tile sheet. Each object occupies a 32-by-32 tile. The next step is to create a blank bitmap that s exactly the same size as the stage. Let s call it the stage bitmap. Copy tiles from the tile sheet onto new places on the stage bitmap. If you do this in an ENTER_FRAME loop, and change their positions slightly each frame, the objects will move. You can think of it this way: the objects from the tile sheet are being projected onto a new bitmap at new places. On every frame, they re projected onto a slightly different place than the previous frame. Figure 6-15 illustrates this.

While I was explaining the Extension pattern, I recommended that you use interfaces to perform typecasts, but in this case there are only the base Request and Result interfaces. There are no SearchResult and SearchRequest interfaces because the classes SearchResult and SearchRequest are specific to the domain of searching. The likelihood that the classes SearchResult and SearchRequest would be used in a different context is fairly unlikely. Though we still want to implement the Extension pattern, we don t need to use an interface, but can use an interface and a class declaration. The other item to note is that both SearchResult and SearchRequest are immutable types. An immutable type is a type that once assigned cannot be modified. In the case of SearchResult and SearchRequest, the data members are assigned in the constructor. The only methods exposed allow the retrieval of the data members, but not modification or assignment.

Each of the five Workspace types implements a common interface called IWorkspace, which allows the Composite UI Application Block components to interact with it. This interface contains members for activating, showing, hiding, and closing SmartPart controls. The IWorkspace interface also provides a collection of SmartPart objects through the SmartParts property, which specifies the active SmartPart control and events for handling the activation and closing of SmartPart objects. When developing a Workspace, you might want granular control of how specific controls appear within it. This is done through the ISmartPartInfo interface and the default SmartPartInfo class implementation that is provided with the Composite UI Application Block. The SmartPartInfo base class provides an implementation that supports the Visual Studio design interface with a SmartPart control. You can simply drag and drop it from your toolbox onto the SmartPart control designer. Currently, three SmartPartInfo classes support the TabWorkspace, WindowWorkspace, and ZoneWorkspace components. Table 15-3 lists the features that these SmartPartInfo classes support. Table 15-3. Workspace Features Supported by SmartPartInfo

The original tile sheet isn t altered in any way. It s simply a source that is read by copyPixels each frame. You can think of the tile sheet as just an array of pictures. If you want to change your game objects, just swap in a new tile sheet with different graphics. The effect is identical to moving sprites or movie clips; it s just vastly easier for the CPU to process.

Everything else you know about velocity, physics, and controlling objects remains exactly the same. The only difference is how those objects are displayed on the stage. Because we ve been separating data from display in all our code since 1, swapping one display scheme for another is a no-brainer. And the other good news All this is done with just a few lines of code, most of which will be very familiar. Let s see how!

The final step after defining the architecture and implementing the individual pieces is to put everything together into a working solution that can be called a REST-Based Model View Controller pattern. From an architectural perspective, a Java servlet or ASP.NET handler will interact with a Parent implementation. The Parent implementation is what pulls everything together and defines the model, view, and controller. Putting it all together, the architecture would appear similar to Figure 11-8.
